Algarve to Canarias, possibly south to the Cabo Verde archipelago; Mediterranean. Suspension feeder (by mucus release) in shallow water, hidden under rocks and in narrow crevices near banks of Seashore lithophyllum, just below the surface. Gregarious and very sedentary. Original taxon: Patella mammillaris. Synonyms: depressa, lateralis, mamillata… 1-2m deep, in grit, Falasarna bay, Kissamos, W. Crete. 8-9mm. |
