Pseudopusula spongicola
(Monterosato, 1923)
Gulf of Gabès and Gulf of Sidra.
Predator on sessile preys in shallow water.
Original taxon: Trivia spongicola.

Monterosato compares this shell to that of Trivia mollerati, in other words Pulteney’s arctica, which is found more globose. The general shape is slightly less cylindrical than in problematica or levantina, the posterior terminal is more expanded than in arctica or levantina, whith which it shares the medio-dorsal furrow; the ribs have the same colour than the dorsum, while they are paler in levantina.

As often in the family, the transverse ribs can fuse on the dorsum or disappear on the sides.

« The possible habitat of this species could be the biocoenosis associated to P. oceanica beds of the infralittoral zone […] We have observed a great variability in the shell dorsum colour, which ranges from pale yellow-beige to red brown, while ventrally is always milky white. » – Smriglio, Mariottini & Buzzurro: “The Trivia spongicola complex, with the description of a new species (Caenogastropoda; Triviidae)”, Bollettino malacologico vol.33, Milano 1997, p.162.
