« In found my first Strombs is in the old, almost silted up harbour, and on the western side of the town at 0,5-1,5m deep, in the meadows. What amazed me was their impressive number, about one animal each 2 metres! This density demonstrates the perfect accomodation of this shell to the Mediterranean. » – M. Rioural: “Turkish Strombs”, Xenophora vol. 51, Paris 1990, p.3. On shallow sand, Karpathos island, SE. Aegean. Original picture provided by R. Pillon for WoRMS. – (CC BY-NC-SA) – |
« During my stay, I noticed twice something amusing: when the wind rises and the waves amplify, the water becomes turbid. Having dived despite reduced visibility, I was surprised to not see any Stromb in the meadows until such time as, the mask on the sand, I saw an apex pointing. The next day, the wind having died down and the water clear again, the colony of Strombs was quietly going about their business. Our gastropod, when burying itself, avoids, in case of storm, to be pushed by the waves and washed ashore. » – Ibid.
