Islamia cf. I. moquiniana (Dupuy, 1851) |
Distribution: all karstic areas in continental France, apart from the Seine basin, in subterranean and hyporheic habitat. Original taxon: Valvata moquiniana. Synonyms: bourguignati, globulina, micrometrica, turgidula… These empty specimens are among the rare to be – almost – nameable by the shell alone, because the population to which they belong has been studied (Locard, 1889) under the taxon Valvata micrometrica, which is suspected now of being a synonym of globulina… which is suspected itself of being a synonym of moquiniana. Shells collected in sediments at the type-sation of micrometrica: in the brook downstream the karst spring and its pond, Camarade hamlet, south-west of Valence-sur-Baïse, Gers, Occitania, S. France. Altitude ≈ 95m. Sizes: 1,25-1,75-1,6mm. |
Variations of spire and name in small specimens of this population. Sizes about 1,25mm. Left: the Valvata globulina by Paladilhe was – very briefly – described after some texts such as those of Valvata minuta by Férussac (not Drapanaud), the minuta by Dupuy, Drapanaud’s one in Moquin-Tandon, etc. Its main characteristic seems to be a « small globose species » (Paladilhe). Shell minute, with a rather raised spire; umbilicus small in the globulina as it is redescribed by Bodon & al., but widely open in the minuta of Moquin-Tandon. Right: the Valvata turgidula by A. Locard, who writes: « Shell of small size, subglobose, well depressed above, with a spire barely protruding over the last whorl » etc. But this could be also a minuta (Bodon & al., 2001)… • Bodon M., Manganelli G. & Giusti F.: “A survey of the European valvatiform hydrobiid genera, with special reference to Hauffenia Pollonera, 1898 (Gastropoda: Hydrobiidae)”, Malacologia vol. 43(1-2), Ann Arbor 2001, p.203. • Locard A.: “Contributions à la faune malacologique française.
