Magallanes to southern Brazil. Some scarce records in Alborán Sea and in S. Italy. The species is commercially exploited in southern America. Original taxon: Pecyten patagonicus. Synonyms: lischkei, patriae, rosaceus, rufiradiatus… The species is occasionally found in Malága area, and lives probably in deep water. Its mode of introduction in Mediterranean Sea remains unknown. The species in C. H. Küster: Systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet Bd.7Abt.2, Nürnberg 1888, pl.53, fig.3-4. « Testa oblique subcircularis, tenuis, subaequilatera, subaequivalvis, utrinque leviter hians, liris radiantibus numerosis costisque parum conspicuis undique obducta; valva sinistra rufescenti-fusca, obscurius annulata, dextra unicolor albida. » – Küster: op. cit. p.197. Regarding the colour of the left valve, Reeve writes: « Elegantly characterized by the alternate rayed colouring of the ribs. » (L. A. Reeve: Conchologia Iconica vol. VIII, London 1855, plate XXVI, species 110). The shell from Gibraltar area, pictured supra, matches this description. Küster, about the insides: « …latus internum albidum vel roseum, costis translucentibus, ad umbones saturarius tinctum. » |
