Scrobicularia cottardii (Payraudeau, 1826)
Mediterranean. Common in Adriatic. Burrowed in soft fine sediments, from intertidal flats down to sublittoral.
Original taxon: Lutraria cottardii.
Synonyms: lactea, siculum, subangulata
At low tide on sand, Ortona, Chieti, Abruzzo, E. Italy. 25mm.
The valves are less triangular in shape than those of S. plana, and more inequilateral. « Dedicated to Mr. Cottard, who serves as rector in Corsica, and is a highly learned mineralogist. » – B. C. Payraudeau: Catalogue des Annélides et des Mollusques de l’Île de Corse, Paris 1826, via BHL.
