Mendicula oblonga (Monterosato, 1880)
Very little is known about this species, previously confused with juvenile of M. ferruginosa. At this time, it is found in Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, on the continental shelf down to abyssal depths. Original taxon: Axinus oblongus. Monterosato writes: « Not to be confused with the young A. oblongus, with begins by being oblique. Our species is devoid, at any stage, of ferruginous epidermis. » – Cf. “Conchiglie della zona degli abissi”, Bullettino della Società Malacologica Italiana vol.6 (1-4), Pisa 1880, p. 58.

1400m deep, off Atlit, Haifa District, NW. Israel. 1,22mm. The pink colour is given by the fixing fluid used to preserve the flesh. Original pictures provided by A. Nappo (IT).
