N. Scotland, English Channel to Guinea, to W. Italy. Burrowed in sand, grit and muddy sand from lower intertidal down to circa 50m deep. Suspension feeder. Original taxon: Lutraria elliptica var. “angustior”. A synonym is var. “alterutra” Jeffreys, who writes: «Shell smaller, thicker, and proportionally broader; front and back margins nearly parallel, anterior side obliquely truncate. » – J. G.
