Mediterranean to Angola. Original taxon: Modiolus agglutinans. Synonyms: abscondita (hidden), vestita (coated), zizyphina (jujube). Málaga, Andalucia, S. Spain. 26mm. « …it received this name because of the huge quantity of shells it amasses around with its byssus, to the point that it completely disappears inside. » – “Descriptions succinctes de quelques espèces nouvelles de mollusques”, Bulletin de l’Académie Royale des Sciences et Belles-lettres de Bruxelles, Tome II, Bruxelles 1835, via BHL.
