Vexiguraleus hispidulus (Bellardi, 1847) |
![]() |
Alborán Sea to Aegean and Marmara. Predator in the low circalittoral down to the continental shelf and slope. Original taxon: Raphitoma hispidula. Synonyms: decussata, nuperrima, peregrinator… « Shell fusiform, swollen, made up of seven to eight convex, almost carinate whorls, flat and smooth posteriorly; the first one adorned with two or three raised striae, the last one with about fifteen equidistant; they form a kind of reticulation by crossing the longitudinal folds; and, as at each intersection emerges a small spine, the whole surface thus remains raspy and rugged. It often happens that the transversal striae, on the anterior part of the whorl, are somewhat raised, giving an almost carinate aspect; the last whorl almost imperceptibly descends to the channel and makes the aperture oval-elongated. » – L. Bellardi: “Monografia delle Pleurotome fossili del Piemonte”, Memorie della Reale Accademia delle Scienze di Torino vol. 9(2), Torino 1847, p.619. Above: a specimen collected at 150m deep, S.
