(?)Spirotropis monterosatoi (Locard, 1897)
SW. Celtic Sea to W. Morocco, W. Mediterranean.
Predator in bathyal and abyssal environments.
Original taxon: Pleurotoma monterosatoi.

The shell of this species is very similar to that of S. confusa, but seems to differ, maybe, by a slightly more concave subsutural ramp: indeed, the keel, at the periphery of each whorl, rises backwards in the apical direction, while it seems to be more perpendicular to the shell axis in confusa. Above and below: lectotype MNHN-IM-2000-3119 collected at 636m deep, in the north of Casablanca, NW. Morocco. 14,4mm. Original pictures provided by M. Caballer for the MNHN – (CC BY).
Details of the commarginal growth marks.
« Spire quite high, acuminate, composed of 8-9 whorls increasing more quickly in diameter than in height, with variable profile… » Teleoconch whorls: « concave at the top, with an extremely developed median keel, whose underface is an extension of the lower part of the whorls, and the top of which is strongly concave in the form of a gutter, with the sharp edge turned upwardshellip; » – A. Locard: Expéditions scientifiques du Travailleur et du Talisman pendant les années 1880, 1881, 1882 et 1883. Mollusques testacés, vol. I, Paris 1897, p.209 and plate IX.
The differences with confusa remain very subtle.
600m deep, Banco Sentinelle, Sardinia Channel. 17,45mm. Original pictures provided by D. Pellegrini (IT).
