Spirotropis confusa (Seguenza, 1880) |
Mediterranean. Predator in bathyal and abyssal environments. Original taxon: Drillia confusa. Synonym: carinata Bivona. 1000m deep, Capo Teulada, Cagliari, S. Sardinia. 15,5mm. |
Bivona gave the very first description of this species. Unfortunately, he assigned a name that was still in use. Hence the choice of confusa for the taxon. « Pleurotoma carinata. Shell fusiform, turriculate, glossy, white. Worls 7, carinate in their middle. Labrum wing-shaped, canal rather short. » – A. Bivona-Bernardi: “Generi e specie di molluschi descritti dal Barone Antonio Bivona e Bernardi”, Giornale di Scienze Lettere e Arti per la Sicilia vol. LXI, Palermo 1838, p.226. Notice the undulating growth lines before and after the keel. |
