Raphitoma philberti (Michaud, 1829)
Mediterranean.
Predator in the infralittoral and the circalittoral.
Original taxon: Pleurotoma philberti. Synonym: variegata.
 
Shell solid, fusiform, slender. Protoconch paucispiral. Whorls 5, moderately convex; suture deep, canaliculate; presence of a marked subsutural ramp. Sculpture made of longitudinal ribs, a little opisthocline, crossed by sharp spiral cords, slightly thinner than the ribs; tubercles point at each intersection; those from the two first subsutural rows are somewhat spiny. Aperture narrow; posterior siphonal notch shallow; the anterior siphonal canal is rather long for the genus; labial margin denticulate inside. Colour: chestnut (common) to honey (rare) background with whitish irregularly placed blotches; sometimes a more or less conspicuous white line of tubercles runs around the body whorl.
