Philine striatula Monterosato, 1874
Azores, Madeira to central Mediterranean, to Cabo Verde archipelago. Predator in the circalittoral and deeper.
Synonym: calva van der Linden, 1995, after the smooth and domed apex, which is a characteristic of the species.
Above and below: 200m deep, 10 miles off Prevlaka Peninsula, S. Croatia. 1,68mm. Original pictures provided by R. Stanić (HR) – (CC BY-NC-SA).
The domed, protruding and smooth apical area; the marked spiral cords that run around the subsutural ramp; with the slender shape and the small size, these features, once added together, make this species unmistakeable. Nota bene that the striatula of Monterosato may not be confused with Locard’s one, now talismani Sykes, 1905, as long as talismani actually exists as a valid species, and is not a catena or a quadripartita.
