Melanella compactilis (Locard, 1891) |
Mediterranean. Ectoparasite of the Holothurian Ocnus planci (Brandt, 1835) in the shallow infralittoral down to the upper circalittoral. Original taxon: Eulima compactilis. The shell is completely smooth. Locard describes this shell by comparing it to others: it is smaller than Eulima bilineata, almost as tapered as Eulima glabra, but with a more rounded last whorl and therefore a less narrow aperture. The colour is uniform, of a « pale rufous [which, in fact, may be due to the colour of the animal by transparency], without decurrent bands. » – A. Locard: “Les coquilles marines des côtes de France”, Annales de la Société Linnéenne de Lyon vol. 37, Lyon 1891, p.135. 70m deep, Hvar channel, Split-Dalmatia Comitat, S. Croatia. 4mm.
