Mangelia multilineolata (Deshayes 1835) |
Azores to Mediterranean. Predator in the infralittoral. Original taxon: Pleurotoma multilineolata. Paulilles, Port-Vendres, Eastern Pyrenees, S. France. 6mm. |
« …the whorls are provided with longitudinal ribs, narrow, very prominent, simple and few in number; the last whorl is attenuated at its end and terminated by an extremely short channel; the aperture is very narrow, white; the right edge, much thickened inwards and outwards, presents, towards its upper extremity, a very small oblique and shallow notch. This shell, milky white, subtransparent, is adorned with a large number of fine transverse lines of a pale brown; in some individuals, of which one could make a variety, the lines are of a much darker brown, on a yellowish background. » – G. P. Deshayes: “Mollusques” in Expédition scientifique de Morée vol. III part I Zoologie, Paris 1836, p.178. Synonyms: bivonae, lineolata, subecaudata etc. Cap Ras, Llançá, Girona, Catalunya, NE. Spain. 6mm. |
« Shell narrow, mitriform. Whorls stepped, subangular at their upper part, with rather numerous longitudinal folds, very slightly oblique. Surface smooth. Aperture elongated; siphonal canal short, open. Columella straight. Labre weakly thickened internally, offering at its summit a mediocre sinus. Colour: tawny background traversed by many red decurrent lines, fairly regularly spaced. » – Bucquoy, Dautzenberg & Dollfus: Les mollusques marins du Roussillon vol. I fasc. III, Paris 1883, p.109. The white subsutural band seems also to be a constant. Notice, here, the unusual chain-like appearance of the spiral pattern. – Paulilles, Port vendres. 6,75mm. |
