Haedropleura secalina (Philippi, 1844) |
Mediterranean. Predator in the infralittoral. Original taxon: Pleurotoma secalinum. Synonym: Bela (Haedropleura) septangularis var. “parvulata”. According to Philippi, the shell of this species differs from that of septangularis Montagu by « costis pluribus, magis convexis, ad suturam utrinque evanescentibus, minus contiguis. » – R. A. Philippi: Enumeratio molluscorum…, Berlin 1844, p.170. Above and below: a shell collected at 8m deep, Vouliagmeni area, Attikí, SE. Greece. 8,65mm. |
The main difference between secalina and septangularis is given by the protoconch: paucispiral in secalina (about 1,5 whorl before the appearance of the first radial folds) with a wide, globose embryonic whorl, vs. multispiral in septangularis, which bears a blunt embryonic tip. |
50-80m deep, Poetto, Cagliari, S. Sardinia. 7,6mm. Original pictures provided by A. Nappo (IT). – (CC BY-NC-SA) – |
