Bay of Biscay to Cabo Verde, Mediterranean. Predator and parasit of some sea-anemones in circalittoral coastal detritic and silt, down to the continental shelf and slope. Scalaria soluta in N. Tiberi: “Note sur une importante variété de l’Arca diluvii Lamarck, et sur le Scalaria soluta Tiberi”, Journal de conchyliologie vol. XVI, Paris 1868, plate V fig.3. The drawing shows an adult specimen, while the original description, given in 1863 in the same Journal, was based on a younger shell. – Protoconch multispiral, smooth, pale fawn, smaller than in algerianum (3 whorls instead of 4) with a typical spiral cord at the base of the last whorl; this cord is missing in algerianum (A. Nappo p.c). Teleoconch: whorls 4-5, convex, separate from each other by a deep sutural furrow (depper than in algerianum); radial sculpture made up of circa 14 sharp prosocline lamellae having a marked angular subsutural shoulder; no spiral sculpture; aperture round. |
