Cerithiopsis micalii (Cecalupo & Villari, 1997) |
Mediterranean. Predator on sponges in the low infralittoral and the circalittoral. Original taxon: Dizoniopsis micalii, despite the fact that the shell bears three rows of nodules per average whorl of teleoconch, instead of two in Dizoniopsis. 85m deep, eastern coast of Aegina Island, Saronic Gulf, SE. Greece. 2,98 mm. « Shell with cirtoconoid “obese” spire. Protoconch ivory-white, styliform, with four moderately convex whorls bearing flexural axial ribs. Teleoconch with five whorls and a deep suture. Sculpture consisting of tree spiral cords, only two in the first whorl of the teleoconch with a third one formed below the suture and increasing
in width in the following whorls. The last whorl which narrows towards its base bears a wrinkled cord as a continuation of the suture and an additional very prominent and also wrinkled one before the siphonal canal. The outer lip of the aperture is simple, fragile and white in contrast to the rest of the teleoconch which is of bright red-brown color. » – Manousis & Galinou-Mitsoudi: “New gastropod records for the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and one new alien ( Emarginula decorata Deshayes, 1863) for the Mediterranean Sea from NW Aegean Sea, Greece”, Journal of Biological Research-Thessaloniki vol. 21(20), november 2014, p.14. |
The main difference with other close species is given by the protoconch: white in micalii, and adorned with a strong axial sculpture while it is smooth in minima or tubercularis. |
