Bittium lacteum (Philippi, 1836) |
Mediterranean to Algarve. The species lives in deeper water than its congeners, in circalittoral habitats such as maerl beds. Grazer. Original taxon: Cerithium lacteum. Synonyms: algerianum, niveum. 31m deep, on sand, off Cala Cinque Denti, northern coast of Pantelleria island, Canale di Sicilia. 5,5mm. |
Differences with the other species of Bittium: no varices, and 3 strong spiral ridges at the base of the shell, instead of 6 weaker ones in latreillii or reticulatum. Hence, special Bittiinae from NW. Europe, such as pale B. latreillii or B. reticulatum can be more easily separated from B. lacteum, whose range, anyway, does not extend north of the lusitanian coasts. 40-45m deep, in sand, at the foot of the Dente del Diavolo, Scilla, Calabria, SW. Italy. 6,5mm. |
25m deep, in grit, on sediments, between Sapri and Acquafredda, Campania, SW. Italy. |
Above and below: unusually coloured specimen collected in sediment at 60m deep, Għar Ċumnija, Ras ir-Reqqa, Żebbuġ, Gozo island, Malta. 5,8mm. Original pictures provided by A. Nappo (IT) – (CC BY-NC-SA). |
Protoconch of about 1 whorl only. Three cords on the base. |
36m deep, San Giovanni Li Cuti, Catania, E. Sicily. 7,8mm. |
