Benthonella tenella (Jeffreys, 1869) |
Labrador to SE. USA and possibly Brasil, Iceland and Norway to Cabo Verde, Mediterranean, in bathyal and abyssal depths. Original taxon: Lacuna tenella. Indeed, this is the most lacuniform of all the members of the genus. The epithet (sweet, delicate) reflects the sculpture, made of numerous thin growth-marks that are crossed, on the body-whorl, by some rare and extremely thin spirals. 1000m deep, Capo Teulada, SW. Cagliari, S. Sardinia. 2mm. |
Synonyms: abyssorum, jeffreysi, kullenbergi… One of the most common gastropods in the deep northern Atlantic. Protoconch coloured. Some marked radial sculpture appears at the beginning of the first teleoconch whorl. |
