Alvania elegantissima (Monterosato, 1875)
Western Mediterranean, on continental shelf and slope. Detritus feeder. Original taxon: Rissoa elegantissima.
600m deep, Capri island, Napoli, Campania, W. Italy. 1,3mm.
Synonyms: abyssicola, dilecta. Same spot. 1mm.
This species was described by Jeffreys as an obtuse form of the Rissoa abyssicola given by Forbes (syn. of testae). It is described by comparison with the latter: « Shell regularly oval, with a shorter spire and less oblique outline ». The primary sculpture is longitudinal, made up of sharp ribs separated from each other by large interspaces. On the base, some marked spiral cords cross the longitudinals and build in the area an obsolete cancellation. The microsculpture is spiral, with numerous thin ribs that run along the whole surface of the teleoconch, except on the base where the spirals do not appear, and are replaced by some radial growth lines.

600m deep, 10 miles west of Dubrovnik, S. Croatia. 1,55mm. Original picture provided by R. Stanić (HR).
